So many of my mother’s generation stayed married, literally, for bed and board. They hadn’t been trained or prepared sufficiently to support themselves in a time of trouble, either widowhood, or a disastrous marriage. Many women of my generation were in that situation also. It is terrible.30

Many respondents believed that the relationships between men and women had also improved, alongside the strengthening of women’s position. A factor singled out as important here was the abolition of National Service, which was seen as having exacerbated divisions between the sexes. In one particularly thoughtful response to the directive, one woman wrote:
